THE ROLE OF KNOWLEDGE HISTORIAN IN THE KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT ENVIRONMENT
WHAT MAKES IT WORK?
Background
How history has been captured throughout the centuries is similar to
how data, information and knowledge are captured in organizations
today. The knowledge historian can be coach, historian, manager,
knowledge agent, editor, knowledge codifier, knowledge gatherer,
business historian, journalist, knowledge broker, knowledge boundary
spanner and/or gatekeeper. The different names suggest overlap in
defining the knowledge historian’s key role in the
knowledge-management process. Following a pilot study, our purpose
here is to introduce the concept of the knowledge historian and to
investigate the roles played in knowledge-management environments. To
further our exploratory research, more interviews and/or surveys will
be conducted in different organizations to investigate specific roles
within the knowledge-management systems environment.

As a respondent to this interview and/or survey, you have been
identified as a user of a knowledge-management system or as having a
support role, though your organization may not specifically use that
terminology. Knowledge-management systems leverage the expertise of
individuals and the efficient transfer of knowledge within an
organization. They can be used to disseminate information to make more
effective decisions. Knowledge-management systems consist of (but are
not limited to) such things as best practices, identification of
experts or expertise within a firm, enterprise portals (e.g., Planet
PeopleSoft) or systems that aid in problem solving by transferring
knowledge from one source to an individual who needs it. Strictly
speaking, knowledge management does not include expert systems.

This research is being conducted as part of the fulfillment of
requirements by the researcher for the Doctorate of Business
Administration Program at Nova Southeastern University, Fort
Lauderdale, FL.

Confidentiality
Individual responses to the interviews and/or surveys will be analyzed
and documented as part of the results of this qualitative research
study. At the end of the interview and/or survey process, you have the
option of including your name, telephone number and/or email address.
This is included only if you wish to have the researcher contact you
for follow-up questions regarding this project. If you choose to
participate, your individual confidentiality will be maintained,
unless permission is granted otherwise.
